Cathay Pacific has commenced nonstop passenger service between Hong Kong and Seattle, marking the only direct air link between Asia’s premier financial hub and the Pacific Northwest. The route, which began operations on 30 March 2026, is operated five times per week using Airbus A350 900 aircraft and brings the carrier’s North American network to nine destinations.
With the Seattle addition, Cathay Pacific will operate close to 120 return flights per week to North America this summer, serving Boston, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver. The expansion underscores the airline’s commitment to rebuilding and growing its long haul network following years of pandemic era contraction, and positions Hong Kong as a stronger connecting point for travellers moving between Asia and the western United States.
Strategic Significance
Seattle is home to major technology firms including Amazon and Microsoft, along with Boeing’s commercial aircraft operations, making it a significant origin and destination market for both business and leisure travellers. Nonstop service between Hong Kong and Seattle had been absent for several years, and the revival of the route reflects strong demand forecasts and Cathay Pacific’s broader strategic push to recapture market share on transpacific corridors.
The timing is notable. With Gulf hubs facing prolonged disruptions from the ongoing Middle East conflict, carriers with robust nonstop long haul networks between Asia and the Americas are well placed to attract passengers who might otherwise have connected via Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. While Seattle is not a traditional connecting hub for Middle East bound traffic, the broader strengthening of Cathay’s North American network adds resilience and optionality for travellers across the Asia Pacific.
Aircraft and Passenger Experience
The A350 900 deployed on the route is configured with three cabin classes: lie flat beds in business class, spacious seating in premium economy, and a well appointed economy cabin. The aircraft is widely regarded as one of the quietest and most fuel efficient widebodies in service, offering a smoother long haul experience compared with older generation types. In addition to passenger capacity, the A350’s belly cargo hold provides meaningful freight capacity on the transpacific sector, complementing Cathay Cargo’s dedicated freighter network.
Asia Pacific Context
Cathay Pacific’s network growth comes at a time when Asia Pacific carriers are collectively expanding to meet surging demand. The Cathay Group, including subsidiary HK Express, carried a combined total of more than 36 million passengers in 2025, and the 2026 summer schedule reflects further capacity additions across its long haul, regional and domestic operations. The Seattle launch is part of a wider trend of Asian carriers deepening their presence in North American markets, driven by strong travel demand, growing diaspora communities, and the economic ties between the technology and trade corridors of East Asia and the US West Coast.
For passengers in Southeast Asia and beyond, Hong Kong’s role as a connecting hub means the new Seattle service opens up onward routing options via Cathay’s extensive regional network, including flights to and from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta.
