Malaysia Airlines is significantly expanding its East Asia footprint with the return of direct flights to Fukuoka, Japan, and the launch of new services to Shenzhen and Changsha in China. Announced on 5 April 2026, the expansion brings the airline’s China network to nine key gateways and reinforces Kuala Lumpur’s position as a strategic regional hub.
Tickets for all three new routes went on sale on 3 April 2026. The new services will commence between July and September this year, with the airline also stepping up capacity on existing corridors to Brisbane, Manila, Colombo and London.
Fukuoka Returns After Nearly Two Decades
Malaysia Airlines will resume services between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Fukuoka (FUK) from 2 September 2026, operating five times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The airline last served Fukuoka in September 2006, making this a near 20-year gap in the route’s history. At launch, Malaysia Airlines will be the only carrier operating a direct, nonstop service on this corridor.
The return to Fukuoka reflects growing demand for travel between Malaysia and Japan’s Kyushu region, a market that has seen sustained growth in both leisure and business segments.
New China Gateways: Shenzhen and Changsha
Daily services between Kuala Lumpur and Shenzhen (SZX) will begin on 1 July 2026, with Changsha (CSX) following on 8 July 2026, also at a daily frequency. Both cities are among China’s fastest developing urban centres, with Shenzhen recognised globally as an innovation and technology hub and Changsha emerging as a significant commercial and cultural destination in central China.
With these additions, Malaysia Airlines now serves nine destinations across Greater China: Beijing (PKX), Shanghai (PVG), Guangzhou (CAN), Xiamen (XMN), Hong Kong (HKG), Taipei (TPE), Chengdu Tianfu (TFU), Shenzhen and Changsha.

Brisbane frequencies will rise to six weekly from 16 August, increasing further to daily services from 25 October. Colombo will be progressively scaled from seven to 10 weekly flights between April and May.
The airline will also operate two ad hoc flights between Kuala Lumpur and London Heathrow on 18 and 22 April 2026, to accommodate passengers affected by recent disruptions at Middle Eastern carriers. This temporarily raises the weekly frequency on the KUL–LHR corridor from 14 to 16 flights.

MAG Arena Unveiled at MATTA Fair 2026
As the returning Official Airline Partner and Premier Sponsor of MATTA Fair 2026, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) unveiled the MAG Arena, recognised by both the Asia Records and ASEAN Records as Asia’s Largest Airline Trade Pavilion at a consumer travel fair. Spanning approximately 46,000 square feet, the pavilion is nearly three times the scale of the group’s participation at the September 2025 edition and features curated travel experiences, next generation travel technology and interactive zones.
The pavilion also hosts what MAG describes as Asia’s largest sports partnership activation by an airline, celebrating Malaysia Airlines’ collaborations with Manchester United and national sporting icons including Datuk Azizulhasni Awang. A dedicated sports experience zone allows visitors to engage with sporting personalities, connecting travel with sport across borders.
Strategic Context
Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of MAG, said the expansion reflects the airline’s strategic focus on scaling its presence in key growth markets across East Asia while cementing Kuala Lumpur’s position as a key strategic gateway.
The network expansion supports Malaysia’s Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign and aligns with MAG’s long-term target of ranking among the world’s top 10 global airlines by 2030. Malaysia Airlines is expected to receive seven Boeing 737 MAX narrowbodies and three Airbus A330neos through the remainder of 2026 to support its growing network.
