Global aviation leaders examined artificial intelligence, operational efficiency and new commercial opportunities during a three-day gathering in Portugal.

LISBON, PORTUGAL — World Aviation Festival 2026 concluded on 15 October at the Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL), following three days of discussions on the challenges and opportunities shaping commercial aviation.

Held from 13 to 15 October and organised by Terrapinn, the festival brought together more than 4,500 attendees and 600 speakers, according to the organisers. The programme featured airline executives, airport representatives, technology developers and industry specialists examining the future of aviation operations and commercial strategy.

Airline Leadership Confronts Economic Pressures

Senior aviation executives discussed the financial pressures facing airlines, including operating costs, geopolitical uncertainty and the challenge of sustaining profitability.

Among the participating leaders were TAP Air Portugal Chief Executive Luís Rodrigues and LATAM Airlines Group Chief Executive Roberto Alvo.

Their participation reflected the importance of addressing commercial performance alongside passenger demand. For airlines, maintaining strong traffic volumes is only part of the equation; managing costs, network efficiency and long-term investment remains equally important.

The discussions also highlighted the increasingly interconnected nature of airline and airport operations, particularly where infrastructure capacity and operational performance affect service delivery.

Artificial Intelligence Takes Centre Stage

Artificial intelligence featured prominently throughout the festival, with attention shifting towards practical applications in airline and airport operations.

Discussions explored how digital technologies could support customer service, passenger processing, aircraft turnaround management and operational decision-making.

Aviation technology company Assaia presented research showing that aircraft turnarounds across the North American and European operations included in its analysis averaged 11.1 minutes behind schedule during the first quarter of 2026.

The findings illustrated the operational challenges associated with ground handling and aircraft scheduling. They also provided context for the growing interest in technology designed to improve turnaround visibility and coordination.

Turkish Airlines was among the carriers demonstrating artificial intelligence applications for aircraft turnaround monitoring.

While these technologies offer potential operational advantages, their effectiveness ultimately depends on implementation, integration and measurable performance.

Commercial Innovation Gains Attention

Beyond aircraft operations, the festival explored new approaches to airline revenue generation and passenger engagement.

The 2026 programme included an Airport and Airline Collaboration track and the inaugural Ancillary Arena competition, reflecting increased attention to commercial partnerships and ancillary revenue opportunities.

Air Canada won the Battle of the Airline Apps competition, recognising its digital customer experience offering.

InterLnkd was named the winner of the inaugural Ancillary Arena competition, which highlighted emerging approaches to airline ancillary retail and passenger spending.

These competitions provided a platform for established aviation businesses and technology companies to demonstrate new commercial concepts.

Implications for Asia-Pacific Aviation

Although the festival was held in Europe, several themes discussed in Lisbon are relevant to aviation markets across Malaysia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Airlines and airports in Southeast Asia face their own operational challenges, including infrastructure constraints, aircraft utilisation, ground-handling coordination and changing passenger expectations.

For regional operators, the significance of emerging aviation technology lies in its practical application rather than adoption alone.

Investments in artificial intelligence, airport systems and digital customer services must be evaluated against operational requirements, implementation costs and measurable benefits.

These considerations are particularly relevant as aviation markets across the region continue developing their infrastructure and commercial capabilities.

Looking Beyond Lisbon

World Aviation Festival 2026 concluded with a clear emphasis on translating emerging technologies into practical aviation applications.

For Asia-Pacific carriers and airports, the discussions highlighted the importance of evaluating new solutions against operational requirements, investment costs and measurable performance.

The next World Aviation Festival is scheduled to take place in Lisbon from 6 to 8 October 2027.
